ZIFF is excited to announce the staging of the Mini ZIFF Bongo Movies Festival 12th June 2015. The Mini ZIFF Bongo Movies Festival Nomination Event is a celebratory event that acknowledges the growing importance of the Bongo Movie industry to the cultural and economic development of the country and to the East Africa region. The 7th Edition of the MINI ZIFF- The Festival of the Dhow Countries, will take place in both Dar es Salaam and Bagamoyo and is generously supported by ComNet, one of Tanzania’s fastest growing internet providers based in Dar es Salaam. Frederick Shirima, Operations Director of ComNet explains their support of this event, “ComNet is proud to support the development of filmmaking in East Africa through sponsorship of this event. The Bongo Movie industry is becoming a major economic and cultural  force and we are excited to be able to celebrate the best of these movies – and share them with the people who love them. We are looking forward to partnering with the industry and roll out innovative ways of marketing the movies through streaming and online distribution as ComNet’s value added services”, explains Mr. Frederick.

During the past seven years, Mini ZIFF has supported the Swahili film industry and this year it will continue with its regional focus.  Festival Director Prof. Martin Mhando explains the vision for 2015, “This year we will focus on the distribution aspects of Bongo Movies throughout the region. We would like to hear from regional filmmakers and distributors about their own experiences in regards to the opportunities and challenges that the Bongo Movie industry is facing.”  As part of Mini ZIFF there will be a Bongo Movies Distribution Forum at the Escape One Venue in order to discuss and workshop these issues.  Mini ZIFF, along with Primetime Entertainment and Clouds FM, will also play host to 50 of the top Bongo movie stars, directors and technical star at an event where the ten Nominated Bongo movies will be announced. Bongo Movies top billing star Ray Kgosi will lead the discussion as he challenges the current status of the industry.

These ten movies will vie for the coveted Zuku Bongo Movies awards, including; Directing, Cinematography, Sound, Editing, Producing and Acting and TV. Zuku is proud of their continued support of these awards, as Mandy Roger, Zuku TV Director explains, “As a channel, original content is paramount to our business. We harness the growth potential in developing Swahili films and awarding them the opportunity to be showcased on the Zuku platform –Zuku Swahili Movies Channel 210.”

THE MINI- ZIFF DHOW RACE
ZIFF is proud to have not only attained a solid reputation among world film festivals, but  also to be  considered one of the most significant cultural events in East and Central Africa.  The cultural focus of all ZIFF events will also be carried through Mini ZIFF 2015. Thanks in large part  to the support from ComNet, Mini ZIFF 2015 will also include a Dhow Race on the foreshores of Bagamoyo Old Customs Beach on 6th June. This will be followed by another Dhow Race in Dar Es Salaam on 13th June. The winners of the Bagamoyo Dhow Race will join other masters at the ZIFF Dhow Race in Zanzibar on 19th July. The Dhow Race has become symbolically linked to ZIFF and acknowledges the master craftsmen of old- makers of Dhows and Sails and those masters who sail them! The Dhow race is a quintesential traditional sport of the coastal peoples of East Africa and this year the IT firm ComNet from Zanzibar has partnered ZIFF to re-invigorate this often fogotten sport as Prof Mhando explains, “Our festival is famous not only for its rich traditions, but also for its multicultural and friendly atmosphere that proclaims what Zanzibar is to the world”.ZIFF’s theme in 2015 is Waves and Visions of Hope, which is most appropriate because we often draw strength from the experiences of others brought to us through ocean travel, reinforcing awareness of the shared histories of communities, nations and cultures.

Naming rights for the Awards at the Dhow race winners are open to corporates and sponsors. This sponsorship opportunity is a way for businesses and organisations to celebrate the masters of a trade that is the emblem of international communication, multiculturalism, peace and skills as well as Swahili culture.

Entrance is free, resulting in a great mix of tourists, expats and local residents. In co-operation with various organisations (first of all LearnAfrica and the Dhow Countries Music Academy (DCMA)) we have, in the two years since starting this initiative, been gifted with the participation of many world class musicians and managed to create numerous fantastic evenings with great audiences. A resident sound engineer guarantees high quality audio and the in-house PA system plus a variety of instruments belonging to the Lodge are available for participants during these occasions. One key aim is to gain exposure for local talent – these performers can gain hugely from meeting international artists on stage and we are holding regular workshops for their benefit*.
These jam sessions also have on several occasions marked the beginning of interesting synergies between recorded artists. In the last year we were gifted with many special guests on the stage including: Blessing Chimanga, Blitz The Ambassador, Bopao Jazz, Brian Mugenyi, Carl Winther, Damian Soul, Derek Gripper, Don Baker, Ekow Alabi & (Ebo Taylor band), Jim Kroft, Joe Driscoll, Karen Mukupa, Malfred Alfred, Manuh Swaai, Msafiri Zawose, Mzungu Kichaa, Paleface & MC Matre, Publish the Quest, Sona Jobarteh, Tcheka, Karen Mkupa,Ben Abarnabel Wolf, Erik Osuwo and many other great musicians from East Africa and far beyond among which Zanizbars own Matona, Adel Dabo and our local resident musicians Swhaili & friends & Wakushi Band.

Crazy Monday has evolved into one of the main weekly live music events on the island, attracting crowds of 100 to 150 people each time with higher peaks at special events. *Together with Learn Africa and DCMA, Red Monkey Lodge has also started a series of workshops leading into a pre-diploma outreach course supported by Goethe-Institut Tanzania; open to musicians and youth from the east coast of Zanzibar. Academic staff from DCMA runs this regular monthly theory course at the Lodge.
Workshops so far have focused on basic music theory, guitar techniques, percussion, live audio and digital recording. Last but not least we also are co-producers of the yearly three-day Zanzibar Beach & Water sports Festival, the fifth of which will be held from the 18th to 20th September 2015, on the beach in front of the Red Monkey Lodge. The 2014 event attracted up to 3,000 people over the 3 days and saw many performances from world-class international artists as well as hundreds of people participating in various competitions and tournaments.

Another focus for the future is to involve increasing numbers of recorded artists in order to run more workshops on the southeast coat of Zanzibar, where there is no real access to musical education and/or practical skill development in the arts sector.

Ndugu zangu, Watanzania wenzangu,

Serikali yangu itafanya nini?

Kuhusu kimfumo, nitafanya mabadiliko makubwa mawili.

Inapofika mahala jamii inasheherekea mali ambazo hazina maelezo, inapofika mahali ambapo jamii inawatukuza wachache ambao wametumia ujanja kufanikiwa, inapofika mahala ambapo jamii inakuita mjinga unapostaafu ukiwa hujilimbikizia mali, hapo lipo tatizo ndani ya jamii.

Nataka sasa niongelee kuhusu miundombinu.

SEIF KABELELE ONE ON ONE INTERVIEW WITH HIGHLY RATED ON THE WORLDWIDE ROOTS REGGAE SCENE JAMAICAN BONGO KANNY

Highly rated on the worldwide Roots Reggae scene, Bongo Kanny’s previous credits include working with Ruff Cutt, The Sun Cycle Crew and even The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Now breaking out as a solo artist in his own right, The North- London based Rastafarian singer is now ready to bring his shrewd social commentary and huge vocal melodies to a bigger audience.A wise nature is certainly a bonus for a lyricist who keenly observes the world around him. Consistently stretching his curious mind and analyzing his viewpoints Bongo hopes hardline topics like the fate of Africa as a nation or outsider politics in the UK can sit side-by-side with party vibe songs. “The music should always help people feel good, even if they have something to think about when they get home”.Stepping up to the mantle as a prominent artist Bongo Kanny says it’s still thrilling when he plays live shows with his band.“Bongo Kanny played a lot of gigs over the last 10 years, all over, in Germany, France, Switzerland, Grenada, Jamaica, UK, Spain, Portugal, Miami and EXIT festival in Serbia".Bongo's airplay has reached an all-time high with features on radio stations such as Radio RJR, Jamrock Radio and BBC 1xtra with Sir David Rodigan rating track 'Joyful' a Scorcher.
SEIF KABELELE: Thank you for taking time to speak with Seif Kabelele.com Please, tell us a bit about you?  Your first steps in the music scene. The boring one for all non-Jamaicans. How did you get into reggae?
BONGO KANNY: I started in my home at 7-8 years old singing along to various songs made by reggae artiste. Sanchez, lukie D, garnet silk. Then went onto youth club with friends were we practice recording. Then onto a professional studio called Ruffcutt who were also a band. They released two singles and a compilation single. Reggae is my cultural heritage...

SEIF KABELELE: What impress you mostly, when you came to Europe? What was different compared to Jamaica
BONGO KANNY: Europe is a fully developed part of the world which is beautiful but without spirituality.

SEIF KABELELE: Tell me about other music you really love, it doesn’t have to be reggae
BONGO KANNY: I love 80's pop music, rare groove, soul and 90's rnb.

SEIF KABELELE: What songs or singers inspired you to sing?
BONGO KANNY: Groups like Jodeci, boyz2men, H-Town, and Backstreet. Reggae was there like the breeze so inspiration was natural from reggae.

SEIF KABELELE: How many albums have you released?
BONGO KANNY: No album as yet just singles. But me and Chris Pecking’s a renowned reggae producer plan the release of an Ep in coming months exclusively 10"

SEIF KABELELE: What kind of message you want to tell with your songs?
What really happens is this. Many people in the world think similar. If you are a artist who think positive, try to make a better world you will be not much different from the other artist who want the same thing. Everyone is different really, in their own way. But I like to look at this as a team. Another man out there who is doing good music – I’m just a part of that team with that man. I don’t see myself as this different and all these things. The most high is not about difference. It’s about love other people to create a bigger impact in a positive way, the team of most high god. People have to tell me the different, but I’m just a man who will just do the things I feel I have to do. If it is good music that I’m doing, you have to feel it. Everyone is different; maybe you have a different dance on stage (smiles).
The words of His Majesty and Marcus. This is I and I core message so the people should see I as a director to these people once with us but there work and words will live forever.

SEIF KABELELE: What are your plans for the future and the album?
BONGO KANNY: To keep recording reaching highest quality and continue to reach the people on the ground.  The lowly sufferers.

SEIF KABELELE: Can you describe your sound?
BONGO KANNY: It wouldn’t be up to me to describe me … because somebody’s opinion of me is not in any way connected to my opinion of myself… I don’t know if I can describe my sound… I know what I try to do is put a riddim to a poor man’s cry with Selassie-I as the backdrop, but that’s about all I can tell you. Reggae roots one drop. With a spiritual delivery...

SEIF KABELELE: You seem to be very busy-performing at several major Reggae and Music Festivals plus you have a lot coming up in 2015/2016. I am sure you have a strong following but would it be fair to say you are niche/underground artist in the sense that you are not really known in the region nor featured heavily in regional media?
BONGO KANNY: Yes that's fair underground. The revolution won't be on the television lol

SEIF KABELELE: What have you learnt from being a father?
BONGO KANNY: Patients love and care

SEIF KABELELE: If you had three hours in your favorite city, where would you go and what would you do?
BONGO KANNY:  >> KINGSTON STUDIO RECORDING- Three words lol

SEIF KABELELE: You’re very much a worldwide thing. What’s been your favorite experience on the road of late?
BONGO KANNY: Recently performing and shooting video in Haiti. Observing the resilience of a people whom suffered so much. Beautiful people and land. A small Africa.

SEIF KABELELE: Final question. Which reggae artists have you most enjoyed sharing a stage with or even just a chat with over the years?
BONGO KANNY: Buju Banton, Babysham, Foxy Brown,  Cocoa Tea, Bushman, Sizzla, Capleton,  Queen Ifrica, Freddie mcgregor, horace andy plus many many more.

In Bongo more famously known as Fid Q, Fareed Kubanda  is a true ambassador for Tanzania hip-hop and has traveled extensively in his quest to promote the art form he is so passionate about.  Fid Q is a breath of fresh air! In this oversaturated Bongo Flava  art form where 'nursery' rhymes earn you the title of 'King of Rhymes', Fid Q stands like a giant that no-one comes close to even stare in the eye! Who else can rock the stage with no gimmicks but pure lyrics? Who in this game stands by themselves amongst well established artists that come on stage with hundreds of tag-alongs just to boost their confidence? The self-declared 'one man army' (‘Fid Q ni jeshi la mtu mmoja') rolls on stage for Dolo and owns the show with enough flows to confuse water down a bendy stream.

SUPER HOT: >> EXCLUSIVE: LELETI KHUMALO a.k.a SARAFINA IS COMING TO ZANZIBAR INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL 18TH JULY 2015

Sarafina! Will be shown at ZIFF with starring actress Leleti Khumalo coming to the festival. In summer 1976 people are angry in South Africa's townships. Especially in Soweto, the largest slum in the southwest of Johannesburg, the tensions grow. Since decades, black South Africans suffer from the racist apartheid system that has installed the white minority government. But in recent weeks, the anger has built up particularly in schools. According to the White government Afrikaans, the language of the Boers, shall become the official teaching language. This is a humiliation for the black population, which usually only speaks English in addition to their numerous tribal languages.
In the middle of the events that take place on 16th June 1976 stands Sarafina (Leleti Khumalo), who inspires her peers to rise up in protest. The young black South African has remained relatively silent in her opposition of the racist government in her country. But now the movement to make the language of Afrikaans the official language in her school leads her to protest in the streets with her fellow students. Her anti-government views become even more intense when her favorite teacher Mary Masembuko (Whoopi Goldberg) is arrested for protesting.
The film Sarafina! Was shot on location in Soweto and Johannesburg, South Africa. Darrell Roodt directed, with the script by Mbongeni Ngema and William Nicholson. It was first shown in 1992 and re-released in South Africa on 16 June 2006 to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Soweto uprising in Soweto. For US-actress, comedian and talk show host Whoopi Goldberg the film was a labor of love. She convinced the executives at Disney to produce Sarafina!
At ZIFF the film will be shown in conjunction with the theme of From Selma to Soweto in commemoration of the civil rights movements in the Black world, and starring actress Leleti Khumalo will be present as the Festival Chief Guest!

ALWAYS STAND YOUR GROUND- NO MATTER WHAT YOU DO, NEVER BACK DOWN. THERE ARE GOING TO BE PEOPLE OUT THEIR THAT ARE TALLER, STRONGER, FASTER THAN YOU. HOWEVER, NONE ARE YOU. ENSURE THEY REMEMBER THAT WHEN YOU DON’T TAKE SHIT FROM ANYONE. BELIEVE IN WHAT YOU WILL, AND STAND UP FOR IT. A MAN WITH A FRACTURED HANDS, IS MORE NOBLE THAN ONE WITH REGRET HANGING OVER HIM

‘Stand your ground??? It's a battle metaphor. To stand and fight to defend the ground on which you stood rather than to run and give up ground to the enemy as he approached was to do the brave or honorable thing, and sometimes it was the difference between a military defeat and a military victory. In everyday language, it's used to mean to remain constant in your beliefs or convictions or it can be to make a physical stand in spite of pressure or even physical attack.

Never Boast - Don't ever tell someone who you are, what you do or where you have been. If you walk into a conversation and give them your best straight away, you have nothing left to impress upon when the conversation deepens..

Never use your old self as a Story - Don't ever tell someone you once were this awesome at something. Let them find out along the way.

Always hold some secrets to Success - If you give someone all your knowledge on a particular issue/topic/sport... what do you then bring to the table? What then makes you unique.

If you reach a goal, make a harder one - Life is all about obstacles and overcoming them, we all have goals. Some we achieve some we never... But when you reach a goal, always challenge yourself to go something harder or more advanced.

Always go hard or go Home - Never play or attempt anything to make the numbers. Always show you are a competitor and you have what it takes. If your team sucks, show them who to look to for leadership.

Seif Kabelele: Good Looking or Clever?
AY: I’d like to think a bit of both. I think anyone who looks at themselves in the mirror every morning then tend tell themselves that they are good looking. I’m clever because my experiences have shown that I have made the right choices. Life is about making the right decisions
Seif Kabelele: Jeans or Kitambaa?
AY: Jeans-I wear a ‘kitambaa’ staff once every two months but I prefer jeans because that is my work outfit. I wear them every Monday to Friday and on Saturday when I perform.

Seif Kabelele: Working out or eating out?
AY: It would be nice to eat out all the time but working out is something that I definitely enjoy. If I’m at home on a Saturday morning then chances are that I’d go to the gym
Seif Kabelele: Totoz side, figure 6 or figure 8?
AY: That’s a hard one actually, may be a bit of both for me. You wouldn’t want to have too much of either.
Seif Kabelele: Make up’s or Natural?
AY: Whatever makes her look beautiful and keeps her happy. She should do
Stay at home mum or go getting career woman?
Definitely ago-getting career woman. The thing is, when it comes to marriage, it’s preferable to be with someone who complement each other

Seif Kabelele: Listening or Talking?
AY: I prefer to listen more. I guess it is because if I talk in between, the conversation will never realy end

Seif Kabelele: A kiss or handshake?
AY: I think there are no ‘rules’ when it comes to dating. There shouldn’t be any rules so I’d wait to see how it goes then decide
Joseph Haule was born in BONGO, he used a stage name; Nigga Jay. Later on his fans, considering the kind of music he is making (conscious Hip-Hop) they decided to call him Professor Jay, the name he has used since then.As an artist, Professor Jay, islargely considered by many as one of the true pioneers of what is now known as “Bongo Fleva” which is a genre of music that mixes elements from Western Hip Hop and the Tanzanian tradition. (Including Swahililyrics as well as an activist attitude towards Tanzanian social issues such as HIV/AIDS, wealth, inequality, and political corruption). When in school, Professor Jay, was a pure comedian. He was the kind of guy that would make everyone around him laugh all the time. In fact, many thought he would later make a career as a Comedian. However, apart from comics, he was also rhyming, writing and performing at different events and functions. His breakthrough came on 1999 when as a member of the group Hard Blasters; he was a solo Rapper in their hit single “Chemsha Bongo” (then he used stage name Nigga J) from their first album, “Funga Kazi”. Only one year later, they won the title of best hip-hop group in Tanzania That hit single, Chemsha Bongo, is credited to be the song that changed the mindset and perspective of many (especially parents) towards the“new generation music” which, in the beginning, was considered and associated with violence, unethical behaviors and gangsters and hence a misconception that such music was only fit for young fellows from the poor tough neighborhoods. Chemsha Bongo made parents not only started paying attention to the “new generation music” but also allowing them to become part of the “new generation music” movement. In 2001, Professor Jay decided to go solo. During his solo career so far he has released a number of hits, including “Nikusaidiaje” and “Zali la Mentali (feat Juma Nature)”. Other songs released by Professor Jay include “Piga Makofi” and “Yataka Moyo” and politically conscious songs such as “Ndio Mzee” in which he imitatesan elder politician and ridicules the fake promises they all mindlessly spew as they are trying to get elected. The song continues with a chorus saying the words “Ndio Mzee” which means “Yes Elder”. Other hit songs from Professor Jay includes; Nimeamini (featuring Lady Jaydee), Inatosha (featuring Sugu), Vuta Raha (featuring Ferooz), Border kwa border (featuring Nazizi), Heka Heka za Star, Interlude, J.O.S.E.P.H., Nisamehe (featuring Banana), Wapi Nimekosea, Una, Hakuna Noma, Jina Langu, Bongo Dar es Salaam, Piga Makofi, Msinitenge, Sio Mzee, Zali la Mentali, Ndivyo Sivyo, Mtazamo (featuring Afande Sele and Solo Thang), Hapo SawaProfessor Jay is featured on Nonini’s song “Kumekucha”In the span of almost 20 years as a performing artist, Professor Jay, has performed in  United States Of America (USA), Canada, United Kingdom (UK), Switzerland, The Netherlands (Holland), Sweden, Norway, Germany, Greece, Belgium, India, South Africa, Nigeria, Ghana, Ethiopia, United Arab Emirates (UAE), Burundi, Rwanda, Uganda and Kenya.

The Zanzibar International Film festival (ZIFF) has hit a new landmark for African film festivals as it becomes the first festival on the continent to have their film submissions totally online, and for a very low fee. With the growth of the Internet many film festivals have utilised the new found capacity to receive films online and reduce the time it took to select films. Festival programmers will now begin to watch films before the end of the submission period and give themselves ample time to watch films carefully and diligently.  “The Festival is no longer accepting film submissions in hard copy for filmmakers outside Tanzania. Tanzanian filmmakers and producers will have one year of grace to submit their films both electronically and in hard copy and they won’t be charged a fee”, said Daniel Nyalusi ZIFF Festival Manager.
“ZIFF has signed with Festhome, an international platform through which filmmakers from all over the world submit films to film festivals”, explained Nyalusi, “For less than the cost of a typical festival submission, we guarantee that your film will be viewed and in good time”. Now people can send a Password protected Vimeo file of any format and submit it online. The ZIFF festival provides an invaluable platform for filmmakers to showcase their craft to an international viewing audience. ZIFF2015, still sponsored by ZUKU, will take place between 18thand 26th July 2015. Deadline for Submission is 31stJanuary, 2015, this includes Bongo Movies.

WONDERFUL TRIP TO ZANZIBAR,>> TANZANIA BOASTS PLENTIFUL WILDLIFE AND AMAZING LANDSCAPES; YET THE ISLAND OF ZANZIBAR IS OFTEN FORGOTTEN.

Tanzania boasts plentiful wildlife and amazing landscapes; yet the island of Zanzibar is often forgotten. On wonders of Tanzania, you’ll explore the country in thorough, from Arusha to the dramatic Ngorongoro crater, and from Tarangire to the Serengeti and a journey’s end on the beaches of Zanzibar. Zanzibar is an archipelago made up of Zanzibar and Pemba Islands, and several islets. It is located in the Indian Ocean, about 25 miles from the Tanzanian coast, and 6° south of the equator.

Zanzibar Island (known locally as Unguja, but as Zanzibar internationally) is 60 miles long and 20 miles wide, occupying a total area of approximately 650 square miles. It is characterised by beautiful sandy beaches with fringing coral reefs, and the magic of historic Stone Town - said to be the only functioning ancient town in East Africa. Zanzibar has lured traders, adventurers, plunderers and explorers to its shores for centuries...The Assyrians, Sumerians, Egyptians, Phoenicians, Indians, Chinese, Persians, Portuguese, Omani Arabs, Dutch and English have all been here at one time or another. Some, particularly the Shirazi Persians and Omani Arabs, stayed to settle and rule. With this influence, Zanzibar has become predominantly Islamic (97%) - the remaining 3% is made up of Christians, Hindus and Sikhs. The earliest visitors to Zanzibar were Arab traders who are said to have arrived in the 8th century. The earliest building that remains on Zanzibar is the mosque at Kizimkazi which dates from 1107, and is a present-day tourist attraction. For centuries the Arabs sailed with the Monsoon winds from Oman to trade primarily in ivory, slaves and spices. The two main islands, Unguja (normally known as Zanzibar Island) and Pemba, provided an ideal base for the Omani Arabs, being relatively small, and therefore fairly easy to defend. From here it was possible for them to control 1,000 miles of the mainland coast from present day Mozambique to Somalia. Indeed, in 1832, Sultan Seyyid Said, of the Busaid Dynasty that had emerged in Oman, moved his Sultanate from Muscat, which was perhaps more difficult to protect, to Zanzibar where he and his descendants ruled for over 130 years. Most of the wealth lay in the hands of the Arab community, who were the main landowners, kept themselves to themselves, and generally did not intermarry with the Africans.
This was not true of the Shirazi Persians who came from the Middle East to settle on the East African coast. The story goes that in AD 975, Abi Ben Sultan Hasan of Shiraz in Persia (now Iran) had a terrible nightmare in which a rat devoured the foundations of his house. He took this as an omen that his community was to be devastated. Others in the Shiraz Court ridiculed the notion, but Sultan Hasan, his family and some followers obviously took it very seriously because they decided to migrate. They set out in seven dhows into the Indian Ocean but were caught in a huge storm and separated. Thus, landfalls were made at seven different places along the East African coast, one of which was Zanzibar, and settlements began.Widespread intermarriage between Shirazis and Africans gave rise to a coastal community with distinctive features, and a language derived in part from Arabic, which became known as Swahili. The name Swahili comes from the Arab word sawahil which means 'coast'. The Zanzibar descendants of this group were not greatly involved in the lucrative slave, spice and ivory trades. Instead, they immersed themselves mainly in agriculture and fishing. Those Shirazis that did not intermarry retained their identity as a separate group. Two smaller communities were also established. Indian traders arrived in connection with the spice and ivory trade, and quickly settled as shopkeepers, traders, skilled artisans, and professionals. The British became involved in missionary and trading activities in East Africa, and attempting to suppress the slave trade centred in Zanzibar.

ALSO VISITED JOZANI FOREST
The Jozani Natural Forest Reserve is located in the central east region of Zanzibar island and is home to the rare Red Colobus Monkey (pictured opposite), which is endemic to Zanzibar. These monkeys are full of character, and roam freely. They can also be seen at very close quarters just outside the reserve's perimeter and are incredibly photogenic. Jozani is home to other species including Syke's monkey's, small buck and bushpigs. The elusive Zanzibar leopard (last sited several years ago) is said to feed here at night - perhaps this is why the reserve is only open during the day?! Jozani has an excellent nature trail and the guides are well trained and informative.

Fishing and agriculture are the main economic activities of the local people. Zanzibar was once the world's largest producer of cloves, and her economy was based on large incomes thus derived. Although cloves are still a major export along with coconut products and spices, tourism has been ear-marked as the primary foreign exchange earner, with more visitors coming to Zanzibar each year. At this stage, the numbers are still low (less than 100,000 annually) and the potential for tourism is relatively untapped. Zanzibar's tourism private sector is represented by the Zanzibar Association of Tourism Investors (ZATI).
PEOPLE, RELIGION AND LANGUAGE:

Zanzibar's local people are an incredible mixture of ethnic backgrounds, indicative of her colourful history. Islam is the dominant religion, and practiced by most Zanzibaris, although there are also followers of Christianity and Hinduism. Population is estimated at 800,000, with the largest concentration being Zanzibar City which has approximately 100,000 inhabitants. Zanzibaris speak Swahili (known locally as Kiswahili), a language which is spoken extensively in East Africa. Many believe that the purest form is spoken in Zanzibar as it is the birth place of the language.
DID YOU KNOW?
-The people of Zanzibar are known as Zanzibaris and their native language is Kiswahili, commonly known internationally as Swahili.

-Zanzibar used to be the world's largest producer of cloves, and its history was heavily influenced by the this activity.

-Zanzibar's paradise beaches are fringed by an abundance of coconut palms. Unlike most tourists, the local people see these trees as more than aesthetically pleasing flora! Nothing goes to waste, and apart from the famous nut, the coconut palm yields an impressive variety of products, among them materials for weaving, building, eating and drinking. The roofs of many houses in Zanzibar (particularly in rural areas) are constructed using makuti palm thatching, made from palm leaves. Its many uses makes the coconut palm one of the most versatile of all plants.

-The late Freddie Mercury, who was lead singer and front man for the band Queen, was born in Zanzibar on 5 September 1946. His name then was Farouk Bulsara, and his father was an accountant working for the British government in the House of Wonders in Zanzibar Town. His family had emigrated to Zanzibar from India but were originally of Persian extraction.
-The rare Kirk's Red Colobus monkey is only found in Zanzibar, predominantly in Jozani Forest. More on this in Touring Zanzibar.

-Zanzibar had the first steam locomotive in East Africa. A tiny two foot gauge engine to haul the Sultan to and fro from his summer palace in the 1880's. Zanzibar also boasted a seven mile railway to Bububu, built in 1905, which became notorious for setting the countryside alight.
-Stone Town has been designated one of the world's few heritage sites by the United Nations.

-The Shortest War in History was fought in Zanzibar in 1896.  On 25 August, Sultan Hamid bin Thuwaini died, and two hours later, an usurper broke into the Palace and declared himself ruler. In a show of Victorian Gunboat Diplomacy, the Royal Navy was asked to evict him. At precisely 9 o' clock on the 27th, three warships opened fire and in 45 minutes reduced the Palace to rubble, and deposed the usurper. The bombardment has since been called the "Shortest War in History" as verified by the Guinness Book of Records.

-At last count, there were 560 carved doors in Zanzibar. The oldest door discovered in Zanzibar is dated AD 1694. When a house was built in Zanzibar, the door was traditionally the first part to be erected. The greater the wealth and social position of the owner of the house, the larger and more elaborately carved his front door. Many doors are studded with brass spikes. This may be a modification of the Indian practice of studding doors with sharp spikes of iron to prevent their being battered in by war elephants. In 915 AD, an Arab traveller recorded that Zanzibar island abounded in elephants, and around 1295 Marco Polo wrote that Zanzibar had 'elephants in plenty'. However, there are no elephants here now, and the brass studs seen today are purely for decoration!
It's a really safe and beautiful place. The people are kind and the government is progressive. I like that moment of sunset when the land glows an iridescent orange-yellow. You hear the muezzins, the people at the mosques who call for prayer. Their calls form a chain reaction across the town, in every village and hamlet. Once the sun is down, we wander out to the sugar-cane-juice vendors and drink till we have our fill.
